Heart for Dolpo

Support children in the Himalayas – give them the chance to get an education, safe shelter, and live in harmony with the Tibetan Bon culture.

‘Heart for Dolpo’ is a project of the Drenpa Namkhi Foundation to support children studying at Dolpo Bon School – a school located in the hard-to-reach Himalayan region of Dolpo, Nepal. It is a unique place where underprivileged children and orphans have the chance of an education, a warm meal, and a safe home.

📍Dolpo, Nepal – a land of silence, mountains, and Bon spiritual tradition. In these boundless spaces, there is an extraordinary school that is transforming the lives of children from poor families and orphans. With your help, they can learn, develop, and preserve their culture.

On the edge of the Himalayas, in the tiny village of Dunai, a unique school has been established. Dolpo Bon School, established in 2009, is a place that provides children in Lower Dolpo with the opportunity for education, care, and a brighter future.

There are currently 90 children attending the school – 52 girls and 38 boys. Under the care of 11 teachers, 2 cooks, and 2 caregivers, they learn, laugh, sleep, and grow. They all live together, forming a community that resembles one big family.

This is no ordinary school. It is a place where children learn Tibetan, English, and Nepali. They learn maths and humanities, but also the traditions and spirituality of their Bon culture.

The school is looked after by Khenpo Nyima Kunkyap Rinpoche, a teacher and spiritual guide who has dedicated his life to preserving the Tibetan language and culture.

About the children

The children studying at Dolpo Bon School come from remote, poor villages in the Dolpo region. Many of them are orphans or children from families unable to provide them with even a basic education.

It is with them in mind that this school was established – so that they can learn in their language, according to their own culture, and in safety. In addition to Tibetan language and religious subjects, they also learn Nepali, English, mathematics, natural sciences, and humanities.

How you can help – become a sponsor

The school survives solely on the generosity of donors. Currently, there is a lack of support for 30 children. Therefore, the Drenpa Namkhi Foundation is launching a programme:

🌱 Bon child support: if you choose to provide regular support of 200 PLN per month, you will provide for one child:

  • full board 🍚
  • warm clothes🧣
  • classroom materials✏️
  • a safe place to live and study🏠

You will become the childcare provider for a particular child, whose progress you will learn about in the six-monthly school news. In Nepal, 200 PLN is about 7300 Nepalese rupees – enough to fully support a child!
